ABOUT
THE AXIAL PROCESS...
The ideas for most plays are borne out of our group workout. Sometimes
there will be a theme we are focusing on, but not always. It is during
this workout that the writers amongst us observe behavior and interactions
that can spark an idea for a play, scene or character. Once the process
of writing a play begins, there are several drafts that are read in
front of the group and constructive feedback is given to the playwright
to make the play better but still within the playwright's intent.
As an actor, I am encouraged not to manufacture results but to discover.
Regardless of how seemingly insignificant the work may seem at the
time, I can look back later and see how it did contribute to the life
of a play. It takes courage to resist searching for immediate, logical
answers. But from experience, I am finding that I like not knowing
everything right away more and more.
